Qana Leonicia Yoj Qiix
a spearhead of the culture of Cobán
Qana Noor (b. 1933, Chib’ulb’uut, A.V.) worked as a ceramic artist for nearly seventy years. She learned the art from her grandmother. To this day, she has imagined and rendered some of the most expressive narrative pieces of pottery in contemporary Q’eqchi’ mountain culture. Her work portrays quotidian scenes of village life. Until two years ago, (at eighty years of age) Qana Noor continued to carry her work to market in a large basket on her head. Though she since retired due to illness, her image is remembered by many cobaneros.
“Extrañamos durante muchos meses a Qana Noor. Siempre con su canasta llena de sus obras de cerámica, con una ollita de cacao batido de a un quetzal la cucharada, un poco de chilito cobanero bien preparado, también a un quetzal la cucharadita… Definitivamente una punta de lanza de la cultura cobanera. Esperamos que se recupere pronto de estas enfermedades que la han tenido tantos meses en cama.” –Byron Córdova, Xk’ape Kob’an
“We have missed Qana Noor, now for many months. Always with her basket full of ceramic works, with a small pot of cacao paste at 1Q a spoonful, a small bit of well made chile cobán also for a quetzal. Definitively [Qana Noor] is a spearhead of the culture of Coban. We hope she recovers soon from her illness that has kept her bedridden so many months.” –Byron Córdova, Xk’ape Kob’an
